Open Source 101: Version Control with Git and GitHub

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Version control is an essential part of everyday modern-day software engineering practices and is the core backbone of open-source. Once accustomed to the tremendous benefits of version control systems, many developers wouldn't consider working without it, even for non-software projects.

In this workshop, I will introduce you to version control, how version control systems work, what Git and GitHub are, how to install and set up Git and GitHub, and how to contribute to OSS projects the right way using Git.

It would be super beneficial if you have the following before coming to the workshop:
  • A desire to learn
  • A working laptop running on any operating system (Windows, Linux, or macOS)
  • Some basic understanding of the command-line interface
  • Basic fundamental programming knowledge
